The Handoff Protocol
Tell me what to do is not help. It is you managing the work and calling it delegation.
Why this works
If you assign tasks, you still hold the plan. Ownership means the other person holds the outcome, including the remembering. That is the only version that actually reduces your load instead of relabelling it. Read this before you start: if there is no other adult in your house, or the one there will not move, this lesson is not written for you — and that is not a failure on your part. Go straight to Lesson 5 of this week. It is written for exactly your situation and it does not ask you to try again. For everyone else, one honest caveat, because this is where most handovers die: you cannot hand over something a two-year-old needs in the next ten minutes. Choose a domain that does not have a toddler's hand on it — school communication, appointments, laundry, the food shop. Something where a delay is survivable. How long that delay is, is yours to set: pick the shortest window your week can actually stand, not the longest one that sounds fair.
Do this
- 1Check first whether there is anyone who will actually take this on. If there is nobody, skip to Lesson 5 now.
- 2Pick one domain, not a task. The whole area.
- 3Set your own window — how long they get before it is theirs and you stop checking. If a small child needs it in ten minutes, it is not the right domain yet.
- 4Run the prompt to write the handover, and give them a 48-hour window to find their feet.
Your prompt
I am handing over one whole area of my household permanently: [domain, for example school communication, meals, appointments, laundry]. The person taking it on is: [who — the other adult in my house, an older child, a family member, a paid helper]. My window is: [how long they get — 48 hours, or shorter if my week cannot spare more]. Help me write the conversation. First ask me to pick a register: Direct (plain, no softening) or Collaborative (warm, with a thank-you). Then write it in the register I choose. It should make clear that they own the outcome, including remembering it, and that once my window has passed I will not be checking or reminding. Give me the words for the first conversation and the words for when I am tempted to take it back. No blame, no scorekeeping, no lecture.

Today's action
Hand over one domain that can survive a delay. Then do not check it for a week.
You're done when: There is something in your house you genuinely do not track any more.
